Roland Garros Day 3
Day three at the Roland Garros was the opening round for many of the top seeds. Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Novak Djokovic, Gael Monfils, Juan Martin Del Potro, Leonardo Mayer, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Maximo Gonzalez, Tommy Robredo, Tommy Haas, Juan Monaco, Andreas Beck and Andreas Seppi are all through to the second round. Day 4 at the French Open will feature Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Gilles Simon, Fernando Verdasco among others.
The Denver Nuggets defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 120-101 after a tremendous effort from Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups. Billups scored 24 points to help the Nuggets secure a 2-2 draw in the Western Conference finals. Anthony managed to put in 15 points despite being hindered by a sore ankle and a stomach bug. Kobe Bryant scored 24 points for the Lakers.
The defending champion Rafael Nadal and last year’s finalist Roger Federer made thier debut in round one the Roland Garros. Both men secured easy three set victories against their opponents. Andy Roddick, Paul-Henri Mathieu, Stanislas Wawrinka, Jeremy Chardy, Nikolay Davydenko, Igor Andreev, Feliciano Lopez, Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Kiefer have all succeeded to the next round.
Day 1 at the French Open saw many familar figures gain their victory on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Marat Safin, Gilles Simon, Fernando Verdasco, Andy Murray, Lleyton Hewitt, Ernests Gulbis, David Ferrer, Marin Cilic, Nicolas Almagro and Mathieu Montcourt have all succeeded to into round two of the tournament. Day two will feature Nadal and Federer with their respective opponents.
The Orlando Magic have defeated the Cleaveland Cavaliers again in a nerve racking 99-89 clash. Dwight Howard put in 24 points in the 28 minutes he was allowed to play due to fouling. LeBron James contributed 41 points. This gives Magic a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. Mo Williams of Cleaveland was given four stitches along his left eye after an injury due to elbowing in the first half.
Kobe Bryant led the Lakers to their second win in the Western Conference finals against the Denver Nuggets, 103-97. Bryant gave the Lakers a 96-95 lead with about a minute left in the game. Victory was assured as Bryant contribued 5 more points out of 6 free shots. Bryant’s game total was 41 points to give his team a 2-1 lead in the series. The Nuggets led for most of the game but had trouble keeping up in the second half with the fouling out of Carmelo Anthony and Kenyon Martin.
The Cleaveland Cavaliers made a comeback in the second game of the Eastern Conference finals, defeating Orlando Magic 96-95. The game was a nail biter until the last buzzer, milliseconds before which a three pointer by LeBron James gave the Cavaliers their much needed victory. James sunk in an additional 32 points during the game. Now the Magics and the Cavaliers are tied 1-1 in the series.
The Denver Nuggets took a 106-103 win over the Los Angeles Lakers in game two of the Western Conference finals, leveling their record 1-1. Carmelo Anthony scored 34 points and 9 rebounds. The lead in the fourth quarter exchanged 3 times between the two teams until two free throws from Chauncy Billups gave the Nuggets a 105-101 lead with 13.7 seconds remaining. Kobe Bryant contributed 32 points for the Lakers while Trevor Ariza put in 20.
The Orlando Magic took a sensational 107-106 victory over the Cleaveland Cavaliers in NBA’s Eastern Conference finals. The Cavaliers held 63-48 lead after the first half, however the tides began to turn in the second half. Orlando first took the lead with 10 minutes left in the game and had to fight till the end to claim victory. League MVP and Cavalier Lebron James scored 49 points.
World number 2 Roger Federer has earned his first title of the season in the homeland of the King of Clay, Nadal. Federer defeated Nadal 6-4, 6-4 gaining his 15th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy. Federer ended a 33 clay court match winning streak by Nadal. Is Federer here to make a serious comeback or is this the dying solace of a great legend?
