American “Goldfish” Michael Phelps won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, breaking four world records in five of his individual swims. His first final was on August 10 and he won the 400m IM in 4:03.86, a second faster than the world record he had set a month earlier at the Olympic trials. At Athens, Phelps received 6 gold and 2 bronze and thus barely missed equaling another swimmer, Mark Spitz’s gold record at 7 gold. Yet he managed to come back better than ever in Beijing, broke that record, and now holds 14 gold medals and two bronze over two Olympic games. Among the attributed factors of his success is his physique, which seems custom built for one of the fastest swimmers the world has ever seen. He boasts a 6-foot-7-inch wingspan, which is 3 inches longer than his height and provides him the advantage of superior reach. He has the ability to ride high on the water as his torso is actually longer than his legs. And the power provided by size fourteen feet and flexible ankles cannot be undermined. Phelps began his Olympic stint at the age of 15, having finished second at the U.S. trials for the 200m fly. The youngest man on the U.S. swim team, Phelps turned heads as he survived until the finals in Sydney and finished 5th. Just five months later, Phelps became the world’s youngest record holder for swimming when he broke the record for the same event. Now at 23, this inspirational swimmer holds the record for the most Olympic gold medals, having received 14 of them.
Nadal has topped off a dream season by winning the gold at the Beijing Olympics, defeating Fernando Gonzalez in three sets, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. Nadal is the first player ranked in the top five to win the gold at the Olympics and the first ever Spanish player to claim the gold for tennis. Novak Djokovic defeated James blake 6-3, 7-6 to claim the bronze after being knocked out of the run for gold by Nadal in the semifinals 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Roger Federer was looking to redeem his season after back to back defeats since the French Open in May, but his hopes of attaining Olympic gold fell through at the hands of James Blake who defeated him in two sets, 6-4, 7-6. Federer may be consoled by the gold he received for doubles along with partner Stanislas Wawrinka, also of Switzerland. Elena Dementieva beat Dinara Safina to take the women’s gold, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 while Vera Zvonareva claimed the bronze for Russia. The Williams sisters won the gold for doubles against the Spanish pair, Pascual and Garrigues, 6-2, 6-0.
Argentina defeated Nigeria in the Olympics football final, 1-0, to win gold again for the second consecutive Olympic year. Barca player Lionel Messi was responsible for producing an opportunity in the 58th minute of the hair trigger game, and Angel Di Maria took it gratefully to score the only goal of the match. Brazil took the bronze medal at third place having defeated Belgium 3-0. In the women’s division the U.S.A took gold while Brazil and Germany took silver and bronze respectively.
The U.S. Olympic basketball team won its 13th gold medal by a margin of 11 points, 118-107, against Spain on Sunday. It seems the rest of the world is inching closer to the standards of the American Dream Team; at a certain point in the game, the Americans only maintained a two point lead against the Spaniards. Dwayne Wade netted the most points at 27, Kobe Bryant followed up with 20 of his own and Lebron James added 14. Spain’s best scorer Rudy Fernandez put in 22 points in 18 minutes. Glory was also with the U.S. women’s basketball team who wiped out their opponent, Australia 92-65, to win their fourth straight Olympic gold.
